Securing your email and gaming accounts may seem unimportant at first, but it can be vital even if you don’t have anything valuable inside your accounts.

A compromised Xbox account password can lead to more accounts getting hacked on other websites if you’re also using the same email/password combination in each of them. If you aren’t a fan of having a different password for every website you frequently visit, then you’ll need to activate two-factor authentication (2FA) to make sure no one gets into your account without your knowledge.

To opt into Two-Factor Authentication: In your ACCOUNT Settings, click on the PASSWORD & SECURITY tab to view your security settings. At the bottom of the page, under the TWO-FACTOR AUTHENTICATION heading, click to ENABLE AUTHENTICATOR APP or ENABLE EMAIL AUTHENTICATION as your two-factor method. Today, it’s essential for companies to offer 2FA (Two-factor authentication) to their users to protect their activities on the internet. There’re multiple types of 2FA out there. In this post, we’ll discuss the three most common methods: one-time password (OTP), a time-based one-time password (TOTP), and a hash-based one-time password (HOTP).

Whenever you try to login from a new device, 2FA login systems will ask for confirmation by sending a code to your phone. Most apps and Xbox do this by sending an SMS or allowing you to generate a unique code also on a separate app on your phone. Setting up 2FA on all the available platforms will allow you to secure your accounts even if they’re breached, which is always helpful since getting any stolen account is usually a hassle.

I think 1Password themselves do a good job of explaining the risks of using 1Password as your 2FA generator: We need to make the distinction between one time passwords and second factor security. One time passwords are often part of second factor security systems, but using one time passwords doesn’t automatically give you second factor security. Put simply, 2FA is an extra layer of security that was created to protect online accounts a step further than the standard username and password method. Mailigen’s two-factor authentication is an optional – but strongly recommended – method of confirming your authorised account user’s identity by combining two distinct, unlinked factors.
