Stereonet 9 brings location and date tagging of individual measurements as well as a free form notes field. Points with location data can be plotted on a Google satellite (or terrain or roadmap) image right in the program. This version of Stereonet is compatible with all modern operating systems and has a modern user interface which has been modeled after OSXStereonet for Mac by Nestor Cardozo and me. It can read and write older Stereonet text files but has a new binary format for its native file. Stereonet 9 for Macintosh uses the modern Mac OS X 'Cocoa' architecture. It does not have the nifty 3D viewing of Stereonet3D, but does have binary file compatibility with the Windows version and Google satellite visualization. Stereonet 9 requires Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) or higher. For those hardy souls using Linux, you too can download a copy of Stereonet 9, though I have never seen it run on a Linux box and don't know if there are any compatibility issues! For long term viability of your data, however, you should still export any work as text files which will always be readable by a large number of programs. A comprehensive manual is included with the zip archive. For Mac Users still on Mac OS X 10.5 and lower (Leopard, Tiger, etc.), you can download a Carbon version of Stereonet. Note that this version will not be kept up to date with the above Cocoa version.

Stereonet plotting programs are extremely valuable, particularly to those of us that are collecting field data. I have enjoyed using my iPhone app (GeoID) to collect geo-tagged measurements over the last year or two, and being able to easily import data into Stereonet3D is nice. Stereonet3D is written by Nestor Cardozo and Rick Allmendinger, and the last version of this application does most of what I want a stereonet program to do:

Stereonet Dip Direction

While Stereonet3D is MacOS software, Rick Allmendinger’s Steronet 9, which is a similar application with many of the same features, comes in Mac, Windows, and Linux versions. The advantage of this is that the same binary file is compatible across all different versions.

These two programs are closely related, but with certain differences.

Which one will serve your purpose best is something you have to figure out through a little testing. If you are using it for educational purposes, for example, Stereonet3D’s interactive 3D view may be particularly useful. Try it out!

Stereonet 9 is downloadable from Rick’s programs website, while Stereonet3D is now available from Apples App Store for a nominal fee. Many thanks to these two structural geologists for putting a lot of work into something that we all benefit from!
